New Progress Twin-Car Book Available NowProgress Twin Car Book

The Story of Blackpool’s Twin Car Trams by Paul Turner is available now.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Progress Twin Car. From a prototype set built in 1958, through to the conversion of ten 1930s-built Railcoaches and ten brand new Trailers in the early 1960s, Blackpool’s Twin cars have graced the promenade and Fleetwood route for five decades.

With the remaining sets sold early in 2010, final withdrawal from service is now confirmed for November 2011. This 80-page hardback book tells the story of these tramcars.

From the rebuilding in the 1960s, the new Trailers, all cream livery, the 1970s, Circular tours, the 1980s, Market day specials, new liveries in the 1990s and the Metro colours of the 21st century these iconic and unique tramcars have gained their place in Blackpool’s history.

Using mostly previously unseen black and white and colour images, many in full page format, this is their story.

This is the first in a new series of books written by local Blackpool tram enthusiasts. The book is presented in the same format as Blackpool Trams Pictorial No.4 and the series is edited by Nick Meskell.

Blackpool Tram DVD 58 - Spring 2010

DVD-58-tram-events

How can you produce a tram DVD when there have been no trams running?

It's true, the tramway was closed during winter 2009/2010 but while the trams stood idle a remarkable event took place - Blackpool Transport sold most of them!

With the 'Supertrams' on the horizon it was hoped a handful of cars would be preserved or retained. Instead, 40 cars were purchased by enthusiast groups, societies and private individuals.

Although some of them will remain in Blackpool until 2012, the majority will be leaving the resort soon. 712 is off to Crich, 619 is heading for Heaton Park and 703 is going to Beamish.

This special edition of the Blackpool Tram DVD looks at all the trams that have been sold. Many of these cars had been stored since 2004 while others ran during 2009 but none of them will ever run in Blackpool again.

The sale of so many trams is not only the end of an era, it also marks the splitting up of the famous Streamlined fleet, first introduced to Blackpool in 1934 and the face of the tramway today.

Trams featured include 607, 621, 625, 632, 634, 636, 637, 678, 676+686, 677+687, 704, 708 and 716 during their final years in service, in store and now sold.

In addition, this DVD looks at the first phase of the 'Supertram' upgrade with the new tram depot under construction at Starr Gate, various track renewal, overhead rewiring and the new platforms at tram stops.

90 minutes plus - filmed and edited in 16:9 widescreen for maximum viewing pleasure!
